Gabions Campground

Nestled along the National Scenic stretch of the Au Sable River, Gabions Campground offers a serene escape into the heart of Michigan’s Great Lakes region. The area is named for the unique rock-filled wire baskets installed along the riverbank to manage erosion, which provide a distinct backdrop to the natural springs bubbling up near the water’s edge. This rustic setting is defined by its quiet beauty and proximity to the famous Shore-to-Shore Trail, making it an ideal base for those looking to immerse themselves in the local landscape.

This federal campground managed by the USFS provides a back-to-basics experience, featuring vault toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables at each site. While the campground offers direct fishing access and excellent opportunities for wildlife and waterfowl viewing, it does not provide utility hookups. Because of these primitive conditions, the site is best suited for tent campers and self-contained RV travelers who enjoy a moderate level of outdoor living and do not require modern amenities.

Whether you are an avid angler or a hiker looking to explore the nearby trails, Gabions Campground provides a peaceful, year-round destination. Please note that while the Shore-to-Shore Trail runs nearby, this is not a designated horse camp and equestrian activities are not permitted.
