John Muir Cabin

The John Muir Cabin offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the rugged beauty of the Alaskan wilderness. Built in 1980 to commemorate the centennial of John Muir’s historic visit to the Gastineau Channel, this rustic retreat provides a true backcountry experience. Situated at an elevation of 1,534 feet, the cabin is surrounded by expansive muskeg, offering outdoor enthusiasts a serene setting for year-round adventure.

Accessing this primitive site is part of the journey, requiring a 3.5-mile trek via hiking, snowshoeing, or skiing from the Spaulding Meadows/Auk Nu trailhead. The trail features partial planking, guiding you through the scenic landscape to your destination. Please note that as a primitive federal site, the cabin offers very basic amenities, including vault toilets and available firewood for your stay.

This location is best suited for experienced hikers, backcountry skiers, and those seeking a quiet, off-the-grid escape. Because of the required hike and primitive nature of the facilities, it is ideal for individuals or small groups prepared for self-sufficient wilderness travel rather than traditional RV or drive-up camping.
