East Chickenbone Campground

Nestled deep within the wilderness on the east end of Chickenbone Lake, East Chickenbone Campground offers a rugged and secluded retreat for true nature enthusiasts. Unlike many other waterfront sites, this campground is situated inland, providing a peaceful, forest-bound atmosphere for those looking to escape the crowds. The site is accessible exclusively by foot or through a combination of paddling and portaging, making it a unique destination for backcountry adventurers.

This federal campground is best suited for tent and car campers who enjoy a moderate challenge. Because the site requires a 1.2-mile portage from McCargoe Cove or a 0.2-mile portage from Lake Livermore, it is perfect for backpackers and those seeking a primitive experience. While the campground offers basic ADA accessible features and hiking trail access, please note that there are no hookups or modern facility amenities on-site.

Visitors should be prepared for a quiet, self-sufficient stay in the heart of the Great Lakes region. Whether you are trekking along the East Chickenbone Trail or exploring the surrounding inland terrain, the campground serves as a serene basecamp.
