McCargoe Cove Campground

McCargoe Cove Campground offers a uniquely remote wilderness experience on the north shore of Isle Royale National Park. Accessible only by foot, canoe, kayak, or private boat, this federal site is a haven for those looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the Great Lakes region. Whether you are arriving via the Indian Portage and East Chickenbone Trails or paddling in from Lake Superior, the cove provides a peaceful sanctuary surrounded by pristine northern forests.

The campground features six shelters and allows for overnight docking, making it an excellent stopover for boaters and paddlers navigating the island's interior waterways. While the site is primitive and lacks utility hookups, it provides a quiet, ADA-accessible environment for tent and car campers who are prepared for a backcountry adventure. Please note that a three-night stay limit is enforced from June 1 through Labor Day to help preserve the area.
