Mahogany Flat Campground (Primitive)

Perched at an elevation of 8,150 feet, Mahogany Flat Campground offers a unique high-altitude escape within a fragrant Pinyon Pine and Juniper forest. This primitive, federal campground is managed by the USFS and provides an unparalleled vantage point with sweeping, dramatic views looking down into Death Valley. It serves as an ideal basecamp for hikers and nature enthusiasts, as it is located directly at the trailhead for the challenging and rewarding trek to Telescope Peak.

This is a true off-the-grid experience, as there are no hookups or potable water available on-site. Visitors must be well-prepared, as the nearest water source is approximately 39 miles away at Stovepipe Wells. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees, and the dirt road access typically requires a high-clearance vehicle, with 4x4 often necessary depending on conditions. Please note that snow and ice can persist into late spring.

Mahogany Flat is best suited for experienced campers and self-sufficient adventurers who enjoy rustic, primitive settings. While the site is ADA accessible, the remote nature of the terrain and lack of modern amenities make it most appropriate for those comfortable with dispersed-style camping and rugged mountain conditions.
